Hello! I am currently teaching summer school program for our borderline rising second graders. After we pretested them we had to decide what were the g a p s and where did we need to fill in. Our students really needed help with two digit addition and subtraction without regrouping. So, every day we have been giving our kids a relatable word problem following a method that has been pushed and taught to our team for the past two years. Our school and county practices Math Solution. Haven't heard of Math Solutions? I hadn't either! Since being trained it has truly changed my way of teaching math!
I just want to show you all the surface of math solutions. Normally, in a regular classroom setting many lessons begin with a literacy element to make the math relatable. For summer school purposes we have been giving students a straight word problem to work through.
The key to math solutions is to give students a blank piece of paper and allow them to figure it out any way they can. Students are expected to not only get the answer but to show how they got the answer through numbers, pictures and words.

After students work out the problem we share out our answers. This is one of the most profound parts of math solutions as students need to really think about how they got their answers and students will learn from their peers as they see how others have thought. This is a truly amazing time when you see students have those cliche "ah-ha" moments but they are being taught by their classmates!!
The key for teachers is to become a facilitator, allow different thinking and ways to get to an answer and to push for students to explain their thinking.
I am excited delve more deeply into math solutions and share this incredible way of thinking about math. Until my next post please go to the Math Solutions website to learn more!
