Today I want to share a new program we as a school are piloting this summer with our ELO summer students. The reading department held trainings on this new program from scholastics in
As a summer school program however, we decided this would be a great time to implement this new program and see how well it works… the results so far? It's AMAZING!
This reading program has a monster theme where students get to attend Beastie Hall and learn lessons from different teachers. There are five different teachers or parts of reading that are focused on.
1. Alphabet knowledge and phonological awareness
2. Phonemic awareness and decoding
3. Word play; syllables, base words, affixes, etc.
4. Sight word
5. Balanced literacy e-books
May . Imagine the push back they received from teachers who were wrapping up their school year and given something else to do. Life of a teacher I suppose. My kids are engaged and singing or reading while on this program. They receive badges as they progress and can unlock different features to their avatar.
We have had other reading programs purchased for us to use and I find this one my favorite for a couple of reasons. 1. There is no time limit or window that students must play. This gives flexibility throughout the school day! 2. Students have choice in what they want to work on, making it more engaging and motivating for them. 3. Students can see how many words they know, how far they've progressed and positively awarded for succeeding! 4. They become engulfed in this kid friendly environment with lovable characters. 5. They JUST came out with an app for tablets and iPads! (which is HUGE for my 1:1 classroom!)
We are having students play for about 25 minutes a day, 4 days a week. I am excited to see their progress at the end of these four weeks!
If you have any say in programs that your county or school purchases I highly recommend iRead for readers K-2.
